Captain America: Brave New World is the big new movie of the weekend, and it’s already off to a solid start for Marvel’s 2025 movies.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, Sam Wilson’s solo outing has opened to $192.4 million worldwide, at time of writing. Of that, $92.4 million is from international audiences, stateside take is currently $88.4 million. With the four-day weekend, Brave New World seems poised to make $100 million domestic, ahead of the initial target projections of $90 million-$96 million. To date, it’s one of the best domestic openings for the President’s Day holiday and the biggest opening of any 2025 movie yet. It’s also the highest open for any Captain America movie yet: the Steve Rogers-led movies respectively made $65.1 million (First Avenger), $95 million (Winter Solider), and $179.1 million (Civil War). Despite mixed reactions from critics, audiences are apparently much kinder to Sam Wilson’s first time leading a Captain America movie. Analyst Luiz Fernando noted Brave sports a B- Cinemascore—reportedly the lowest grade ever for an MCU movie.
As for non-Cap movies, last week’s Love Hurts and Heart Eyes got Valentine’s Day boosts. Domestically, Love Hurts made an additional $4.4 million (for a $12.3 million weekend take), and Heart Eyes gained another $10 million for $21.5 million in its second weekend. Heart Eyes actually grew in its sophomore weekend, prompting director Josh Ruben to thank audiences for taking a chance on “a different kind of horror movie — and you’re spreading the word.”
Marvel movies either lose momentum or keep on going in theates after their opening weekends. The next big genre movie is The Monkey on February 21, followed by Mickey 17 on March 7. We’ll see how Sam fares as Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four wait their turn.
