Huawei is preparing to launch its first foldable PC, likely named MateBook Fold Ultimate Design, and has released an official teaser confirming the device’s debut on May 19. The teaser image highlights an ultra-thin foldable design, suggesting visual similarities to Huawei’s flexible smartphones, such as the Mate X series. This device will be part of the company’s “Ultimate Design” line, known for premium build quality and distinct aesthetics, possibly featuring a metal chassis and smartphone-style hinge.
Huawei has also confirmed that the foldable PC will run HarmonyOS as its native operating system, indicating a shift away from Windows, at least for its Chinese market. This move aligns with the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its ecosystem with self-developed software and reduce reliance on U.S. technologies.
Although full specifications haven’t been officially revealed, leaks suggest the MateBook Fold Ultimate Design will feature a touchscreen display, enabling it to function both as a laptop and a tablet. Internally, it is expected to offer 32 GB of RAM and 2 TB of internal storage, putting it in line with other high-end foldable devices.
The chipset powering the device will reportedly be the Kirin X90, a new ARM-based processor developed and manufactured entirely with Chinese components, showcasing Huawei’s focus on domestic technology solutions.
The rumored model number for the device is HPR-W72, and there’s some speculation that the final name could also include the “RS” branding, similar to Huawei’s luxury smartphone lines like the Mate 70 RS. This suggests the foldable PC may target premium users and tech enthusiasts seeking both innovation and performance.

While Huawei has not officially detailed global launch plans, the MateBook Fold is expected to compete with similar foldable notebooks in development by brands like Lenovo. The foldable laptop market is still emerging, and Huawei appears poised to become a serious contender.
Some earlier rumors from December 2024 also suggested that a foldable laptop with a haptic feedback keyboard was in development, though no brand was named at the time. Many now believe this was an early leak related to the MateBook Fold.
Huawei’s May 19 launch event will also introduce the Nova 14 smartphone series, but all eyes will be on the company’s ambitious step into the foldable PC space.
